Study Finds Dogs Are Smarter Than Cats

Dogs are incredible creatures. They are loyal, kind, and very smart – apparently even a lot smarter than their feline counterparts!

According to azcentral.com, researchers at Vanderbilt University have discovered that a dog's cerebral cortex contains more than twice the neurons of a cat's brain.

Neurons, the cells that send messages to and from the brain, are strongly related to intelligence.

Suzana Herculano-Houzel, a Vanderbilt  Associate Professor of Psychology and Biological Sciences, said that dogs have around 530 million cortical neurons whereas cats have roughly 250 million.

Herculano-Houzel released her findings in a paper that researched the number of cortical neurons in the brains of a number of carnivores.

"I would bet money on a large dog over a cat any time," Herculano-Houzel said in the video above. "They have the biological capability of doing much more complex and flexible things with their lives than cats can."

Looks like dogs rule after all!
